The TUC of River Tucunaré
The Rio Manicoré Common Use Territory (TUC) is the first Common Use Territory recognized by the Government of the State of Amazonas through a collective Real Right of Use Concession (CDRU). The territory brings together traditional riverside, agro-extractive, and indigenous populations from 16 communities who live from forest management, fishing, family farming, and other sustainable activities.
Covering approximately 390,000 hectares, the TUC was created to guarantee territorial protection, land security, and the strengthening of traditional ways of life, seeking to contain land grabbing, deforestation, and other pressures on the territory.
CAARIM
CAARIM is the central organization of Agro-extractive Associations of the Manicoré River region and was founded in 2006 as a result of the mobilization of the communities themselves in defense of their territory, forest, and the rights of traditional populations. Since its creation, it has worked to strengthen community associations, organize communities socially, and collectively build strategies for protecting the territory.
Currently, CAARIM is the organization responsible for coordinating the management of the Manicoré River Conservation Unit, organizing assemblies, participatory processes, community projects, and presiding over the territory's Self-Management Council.
GOVERNANCE AND SELF-MANAGEMENT
The Rio Manicoré Traditional Community Territory (TUC) is one of the first territories self-managed by traditional communities in Brazil. Its management is based on a community self-management model, approved by the communities themselves in a general assembly.
Decisions regarding the territory are made collectively through meetings, community assemblies, and the Self-Management Council, composed solely of community representatives. This model seeks to strengthen community autonomy, territorial protection, and collective care for natural resources.
WHAT WE DO
"The forest remains alive when the territory is cared for by those who belong to it."
CAARIM works to strengthen the traditional communities of the Manicoré River through territorial protection, community management, and the development of sustainable initiatives linked to the forest and rivers.
We work with community education, support for local associations, territorial monitoring, digital inclusion, strengthening governance, environmental conservation, and income-generating projects that respect the traditional ways of life in the Amazon.

OUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE
"We want a preserved territory, with controlled deforestation and reforestation of everything we have already lost."
We hope that the abundance of fish continues, with the population being aware and taking care of things that belong to everyone.
We hope to have treated, good-quality water available in all communities, and streets free of mud, paved with dignity. We hope there will be guaranteed healthcare with health centers in the communities and full access to education.
We want quality schools, with vegetable gardens, living forests, technology and good infrastructure, close to families, and universities in rural areas, so that young people can study near home and remain in the region.
We dream of conscious youth who value the environment, know how to care for fishing, hunting, and all our traditional activities. A youth that produces autonomously, free from the oppressive political system.
We advocate for the guaranteed flow of production and a fair market for what we produce, with strong and organized associations. We fight for unity, courage, and a people unafraid to defend their rights.
Finally, we want the repossession of the parts of the territory that were taken from us. And, above all, a better life for everyone, with equality, justice, and respect among all.”
