Projects

CAARIM develops projects and partnerships aimed at strengthening the traditional communities of the Manicoré River, working on initiatives for territorial protection, income generation, community management, and environmental conservation.

Currently, CAARIM maintains partnerships with the Government of the State of Amazonas, socio-environmental organizations, and universities. Among the ongoing initiatives are training programs for communities in communication, association management, and strengthening community governance.

In partnership with The Nature Conservancy and the Wildlife Conservation Society, a fishing monitoring project is also underway in the territory. The National Council of Extractive Populations works in partnership on connectivity and digital inclusion initiatives in the communities.

IDESAM, on the other hand, develops actions related to community-based tourism, in addition to research and activities focused on the management and governance of the Community-Based Tourism System (TUC) of the Manicoré River.

Community-based tourism

CAARIM, IDESAM, TNC, and the TUC communities are developing a Community-Based Tourism Business Plan to sustainably develop tourism, strengthening income generation, community autonomy, and territorial conservation.

Soon, visitors will be able to explore the landscapes, knowledge, and culture of the Manicoré River region through authentic experiences led by the communities themselves.

Territorial Governance

The governance of the Rio Manicoré Conservation Unit is conducted by the communities themselves through the Self-Management Council and CAARIM.

Together, they coordinate land management, strengthen community participation, and forge partnerships to promote forest conservation, local autonomy, and the sustainable development of families living along the Manicoré River.

Fisheries Monitoring

Fisheries monitoring in the Rio Manicoré Conservation Unit is carried out by the communities themselves through trained community monitors, with support from TNC Brazil and WCS Brazil.

This initiative is part of the Fisheries Agreement, collectively developed to strengthen the sustainable management of fisheries resources.

In addition to generating information about fishing activity, monitoring strengthens community leadership in the conservation of aquatic environments, guides management decisions, and contributes to the protection of traditional ways of life in the territory.

Rural Production

Cassava is the main basis of agricultural production in the Rio Manicoré Conservation Unit. To strengthen family farming and generate more opportunities for communities, CAARIM supports initiatives aimed at structuring the cassava production chain, including the implementation of mechanized flour mills.

With the support of parliamentary amendments from state representative Sinésio Campos, these actions increase productivity, improve working conditions, add value to local production, and strengthen income generation for families living in the territory.

Community Strengthening

Community strengthening encompasses a set of initiatives aimed at providing institutional support to the communities of the Rio Manicoré Territorial Unit, including the regularization and strengthening of local associations, leadership training, and improvements to the infrastructure supporting territorial management.

These actions are developed by CAARIM and the communities with the support of the Casa Fund, TNC Brazil, IDESAM, and Greenpeace, contributing to expanding the communities' capacity for organization, representation, and articulation, as well as strengthening the structures necessary for the shared management of the territory.

Connecting the Peoples of the Forest

The Forest Peoples Connection project is an initiative of the National Council of Extractive Populations (CNS), developed in partnership with CAARIM and other Amazonian organizations, with the goal of expanding access to the internet and communication technologies in rural communities within conservation units and territories of collective use.

In the TUC Rio Manicoré project, the initiative contributes to strengthening communication between communities, expanding access to information, facilitating participation in territorial management processes, and bringing residents closer to opportunities for education, training, and institutional coordination, while respecting the lifestyles and autonomy of traditional populations.

CAARIM is an organization committed to strengthening Amazonian communities, valuing traditional knowledge, sustainability, and the relationship between territory, culture, and nature.
